Literally ‘the country in the middle’, covers an area of 9.6 thousand square km and is the third largest country after Russia and Canada. I t has the largest population:1.314480 million, up to the year 2006, 1/5 of the world’s population (excluding the Chinese that live in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan).

By 2006, China had 577.600.000 urban residents(43.90% of the total population), According to the Annual Report published by the Ministry of Construction and, to date, has 668 cities of which:

  • 13 with a population of over 2 million inhabitants;
  • 24 with a population which ranges from 1 to 2 million inhabitants;
  • 48 with a population between 500 thousand and 1 million;
  • 205 between 200 thousand and 500 thousand;
  • 378 with fewer than 200 inhabitants.

China has 1.867 schools of further education (data from 2006). 42.8% of the population goes on to higher education, and 19% has degrees. The economic boom in China started in 1978, as a result of radical economic reforms. The Gross Domestic Product has grown from US$ 128 billion in 1980 to US$2.279 billion in 2005. Import and export for 2005 has reached US$1.422.1 billion and Direct Foreign Investments are in the range of US$193.72 billion in 2006.
Income pro capite in 2005 was US$1.290.
According to statistic made by Customs, the total import and export in January 2007 was of US$157.36 billion with an increase per year of 30.5%:

  • Exports are equal to US$86.62 billion, with an increase of 30%
  • Imports are equal to US$70.74 billion, with an increase of 27.5%

124,94 tourists visited China in 2006, an annual increase of 3.9%, of which 22.21 million foreigners and 102.73 million Chinese from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
The profits from foreign exchange from International tourism have overtaken the United States by US$33.95 million, with an increase of 15.9% on the previous year.
