The 1990s

1992 – Seville, Spain
The theme here was ‘The Age of Discovery’ and coincided with the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first voyage. Avant-garde buildings were constructed to host the exhibitors on the island of Certosa which was connected to the centre by a new bridge, the Alamillo, designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava, and which has now become the symbol of modern Seville. The majority of installations used by the Expo have been converted to other uses and some have been used for a technological park. The new railway station of Santa Justa was built for the 42 million visitors together with the high speed tract for Madrid.
